How to create a content plan for your community in space?

Updated: Jul 2

To keep your community vibrant, you need to keep engaging with your community members on a regular basis. There are two ways to stay in touch: in-person encounters and events, or online communication. In this article we are focusing on online communication, and on the content plan for your newsfeed. If you are interested in event planning, you should check out our article Events for your community.

Online community platforms are more and more important nowadays, and that is why it is important to be prepared with a good plan. Your approach to content creation should be thoughtful, allowing you to deliver the most relevant content you can. With a good plan in place, you can take the first step toward achieving your community goals.

Since having a great content plan is essential for every community’s success, we will help you take the first steps towards content optimization in this article. Let's have a look at them:

Step 1: Set content goals

It’s always important to reconsider what you really want to achieve from your content plan. What's your aim for developing a content plan? Know your goals before you begin planning. Analyze your current scenario and learn from your previous experiences.

Step 2: Get to know your target group

Community managers need to understand their community – everything from their needs, ambitions and interests to their behavior. If you know your community members well, you can more easily create content that might be interesting and useful for them. Check out our article in which we’ve compiled 5 tips of getting to know your community members better.

Step 3: Define your preferred types of content

What type of content works for your community the best? What forms will your content take? Videos? Polls? Articles? Infographics? However, the most important question to have in mind is what type of content helps you to increase your community engagement rate. An engaged community is the goal for every community manager. So, think about content not only from your business perspective - what you need to deliver to your community members, but most importantly from the member´s perspective - what your members would like to learn from you.

Another way to look at your content types is to create some “templates” for each theme and plan your content based on these themes, for instance:

  • Building updates and announcements

  • Behind-the-scenes content

  • “Did you know?”

  • And many more...

Step 4: Create a content calendar

If you know your goals, your target group and what type of content works for your community the best, decide how often you would like to communicate to your community - on a daily, weekly, or bi-weekly basis perhaps? Every type of content requires a different frequency. To ensure you don’t forget anything, prepare your content beforehand and put reminders in your calendar.

Step 5: Measure and evaluate

Data is power! The more information you have, the better equipped you are to update your content plan. Try to capture all the data that could possibly help you with your future decisions. We recommend you to create lessons learned sheet or content datasheet, and then write down all the new data and lessons learned on an ongoing basis. Things change rapidly, so don't be afraid to adjust your content plan to your learnings. You can learn more about community metrics in our article What to measure in your community?
